Achilles tendonitis is a common problem in runners and other athletes that do a lot of running. These Achilles tendon attaches the very powerful calf muscles to the heel bone, so the tendon does take a heavy load. If that load exceeds what the tendon can take, a tendonitis can occur. Worn out running shoes is the excessive load can come from; and excessive running mileage; from being overweight; from running up hills too much. It usually just starts as an ache, but if not treated it can progress until it interferes with running. Cutting back running, physical therapy and heel raises is the treatment tp this condition.
